Through a dark, starless night soldiers approached
Breaching the compound to stage their coup
Dawn saw a dictator deposed, and crowds cheered
But stalwarts of the old regime feared – what will we do?
Loyalists to the old government who could, fled and hid
While others were persecuted, killed, or jailed
Momentum in the new movement maintained its dominance
And providence proved to the prior politicians they had failed.
Their power, their prominence, their world swept away
Overnight they became the forgotten, forced to the fringe
Horrified, humbled, humiliated, and hunted, they hid
While cheering crowds bid them farewell, old stalwarts cringe.
